Description
Specimen consists of a segment of oesophageal wall measuring 11 cm in length. This has been
opened posteriorly to reveal a submucosal nodular tumour mass. On sectioning this has a whorled
cut silk appearance.
History
This 70 year old male was admitted with a dissecting aneurysm of the thoracic aorta. At
postmortem examination this submucosal leiomyoma was found within the oesophagus, it had
apparently been asymptomatic.
